EQUIPMENT OF APPLIED RADIOCHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT
Laboratories of the department are equipped with protective alpha- and beta-boxes for realization of researches and bench tests related to intermediate-level radioactive solutions (2-nd class) and with equipment for chemical and radiochemical analyzing of patterns and samples:
- extraction bench on the basis of multistage small-size centrifugal extractors provided with computer-based process monitoring and operation, and also - small-scale evaporation installations;
- wide-range spectrophotometer provided with digital treatment of spectra, aimed to study complexation of actinides and other elements in aqueous and organic solutions;
- spectrophotometers for mass analyzes, alpha- and gamma-spectrometers provided with computer-based registration with the purpose of accelerated analyzing of chemical samples from researches and bench tests.
Applied Radiochemistry Department has available hot cells, heavy boxes, and exhaust chambers for working with real patterns of SNF from NPPs.
Equipment for SNF cutting, dissolving, filtration, and processing is arranged in NEC chambers:
- two extraction benches, one of which is mounted on mixing and sedimentation tanks, and another - on centrifugal extractors;
- sorption and evaporation bench destined for studies in technological processes for the management of various type waste;
- installation of plasma chemical solution denitration;
- process vessel for gas-static pressing, suitable for mineral-alike matrix reaching.
With the purpose to entrap gaseous and volatile radionuclides generated in the run of NPP SNF processing there is created unique gas-purification bench, which has, particularly, allowed to separating and transformation into a form suitable for long-term storage of more than 100 Ci caused by krypton-85.
In order to ensure analytical support to researches and bench tests of SNF processing technologies analytical laboratory is equipped with the necessary equipment and appropriate instrumentation for analyzing of substances with high, intermediate, and low level of radioactivity. Among the tools applied for measurements there are alpha-spectrometers, gamma-spectrometers, spectrometers for X-ray fluorescent analysis, laser fluorescent spectrometer, spectrophotometers, flight-time mass-spectrometer, ion-selective electrodes, etc. Analytical potential available in the Laboratory gives opportunity to realize determination of composition and content of a wide assortment radioactive and stable chemical elements and compounds in both liquid and solid samples.
