General activity directions

In 1973 The Ministry under scientific leadership of Khlopin Radium Institute organized Joint Service for Environmental Radioactivity Monitoring in the region of nuclear system facility construction, located in southern Baltic seaboard in the city of Sosnovy Bor. In 1987 this Service was included into the structure of Radium Institute in a form of SUE RPA RI Laboratory for Regional Environmental Monitoring and Risk Assessment.

Results of ecological researches, reached by the Laboratory in Sosnovy Bor, are of great practical importance for realization of authorities and responsibilities of the State Authority, the Russian Federation and local government subjects, as well as for realization of informational support to implementation of international obligations by Russia in Baltic Region.

In contrast to traditionally arranged environmental radiation monitoring having a purpose to prove the fact that permissible volume/specific activities of man-caused radionuclides in environment components are not exceeded as a result of emission and discharges from radiation-dangerous facilities, integrated environmental monitoring organized in early 70-s in the region of Sosnovy Bor is aimed to:

  • Studies, evaluation, and ranking of both radiation and non-radiation man-caused factors and their environmental sources.
  • Obtaining of quantitative evaluations for internal and external radiation exposure doses to the population in the region of Sosnovy Bor and studying of the ways for their forming.
  • Assessment of effect from nuclear system facilities to the environment and to human's health, when compared with other industrial facilities.
  • Informational support to reaching decisions for ecological safety assurance under a long-term storage of radioactive waste.
  • Informational support to arrangements ensuring compliance with requirements of RF Laws associated with readiness to emergency radiation situations.

The Laboratory is provided with accreditation of the Gosstandard of Russia in the system of laboratories and centers for radiation monitoring. Long-term investigations in territories located within margins of radiation-dangerous enterprises make provision for independent environmental monitoring of the system of man-caused exposure factors: radiation, chemical, and thermal, - as well as for evaluation and ranking of risk of negative ecological consequences coursed by these facilities operating under normal operation mode and breaches of process order, and also ensure informational support to decision making and to development of normative documentation.
