MUSEUM OF V.G. KHLOPIN RADIUM INSTITUTE

Radium Institute's Museum was opened in 1988 in historically first main building of the Institute, located in con. 1, Roentgen Street, on the occasion of the 125-aniverssary of the birth of academician V.I. Vernadskiy. The Museum includes memorial workroom of Vernadskiy and Khlopin, two halls presenting materials reflecting a life and activities of these outstanding scientists and science initiators. In addition there is a hall, where they keep the main part of the first in Europe cyclotron: it's magnet and acceleration chamber

Exposition stands in the hall named after V.I. Vernadskiy (former assembly hall of the Institute) present the whole course of his life and creative development. Special attention is paid to issues associated with studying and deep understanding of radioactive phenomena by V.I. Vernadskiy, as well as with his integrating conceptions of these phenomena effect to the Earth and the Space being. The exhibits give to understand managerial activity of V.I. Vernadskiy in a number of commissions, expeditions, in creating of special-purpose laboratories and institutions, including establishing of Radium Institute in 1922 together with his nearest brother-in-arms, V.G. Khlopin.

In the hall for V.I. Vernadskiy there are also presented thematic exhibits devoted to various memorable days, as well as to activity and life of scientists, who have made a sizeable contribution to the study of radioactivity phenomenon. These exhibitions are periodically refreshed. In the same hall they held ceremonial anniversary celebrations meetings of Institute's crew, lectures and seminars for students and teachers.

Another hall - the hall in the name of V.G. Khlopin - presents a course of life and creative development of academician V.G. Khlopin, who was the nearest brother-in-arms of V.I. Vernadskiy and succeeded to him in position of Institute's Director since 1939. Museum stands present V.G. Khlopin's activity since the arrangement of radium production on the basis of domestic mineral products and up to development of technology for plutonium recovery from irradiated uranium, and participation in giving support to Soviet nuclear weapons tests.

In the center there is ebony table with incrustations, reading lamp, desk set, private belongings of V.G. Khlopin. On oval table near the wall there are the first devices destined to study radioactivity, samples of uranium minerals. Mahogany bookcase with the books from V.G. Khlopin's library also stays in the workroom. On the bookcase there are pictures of V.G. Khlopin and M.A. Pasvic-Khlopina, and also - china vase - a present to V.G. Khlopin from Institute colleagues in the day of his sixties anniversary.

Among the documents presented there are certificates obtained at certification of radium preparations in foreign radiological centers, signed by outstanding scientists of that time.

The Museum closely cooperates with Institute's archive, where they keep documents related to activities of the Institute and it's outstanding scientists, such as: V.G. Khlopin, B.A. Nikitin, A.P. Rutner, I.E. Starik, etc.

Sizeable energy and efforts were given to this museum creation and successful maintenance by G.S. Sinitsin (Museum's founder and first director) and V.R. Clockman, who had started their activity at the Institute already in a period , when V.G. Khlopin was there. E.A. Shashoukov heads the Museum since 1994

Inestimable support and assistance comes to Museum from the branch of SUE RPA V.G. Khlopin Radium Institute - RPE KIRCI (Director - M.L. Savopulo).
