The department for scientific and technical information was established in the Institute in 1963. This department was organized with active support of Institute's Director V.M. Vdovenko and headed until 2002 by c.ch.s. E.I. Ilienko, who was a radio chemist and a disciple of academician B.P. Nickolskiy. The department's staff was formed for the most part of radio chemists, who had had previous experience of working in laboratories of the Institute. Thanks to a high professional skill of employees the department in a short time built up a reputation of informational leader in the field of problems related to radiochemistry. In 1972 by the order of the Minister this department was appointed the Head Department for these problems within the Branch.

At the present time the main line of department's efforts is associated with selecting and analyzing of information on the works related to nuclear fuel cycle and other radiochemical technologies. Output products represent reviews of fresh (and retrospective, if necessary) domestic and foreign scientific and technical literature related to the subjects (including books, articles, patents, materials of conferences and symposiums, etc.) In such a manner series of reviews are devoted to analyzing of conditions and projects for development of radiochemical industry in the USA, France, Great Britain, Belgium, Japan, Italy, and other countries.

Separate problems of radiochemical technologies are also included in consideration:

• processing of various type radioactive waste;
• analytical support to technologies;
• recovery of separate radionuclides from waste and potentiality of their usage;
• new technological equipment;
• RW storage and disposal, etc.

The department also carries out the orders for reviews on subjects non-connected with radiochemistry. There were issued reviews on neutralization of waste from galvanic and other metal-working productions, on extraction of valued components from waste, on problems related to producing of new materials, including semi-conductive, and other tasks.

For the period of working the department have issued more than 200 analytical reviews.

Since 1975 the department provides the Management of the Institute with brief operative information on problems associated with radiochemistry and radiochemical production, oriented to the needs of particular leaders and/or related to special one-time requests.

Department's employees created English-Russian and Russian-English technical dictionary-glossaries on nuclear fuel cycle, issued in print and electronic versions. (Electronic version is compatible with popular multilingual vocabulary Lingvo). On the basis of these glossaries two Branch standards of terms and definitions were drawn up together with Laboratory for standardization.
